Detector Dog Bonnie
Chesneypark Milligan Magic (aka Bonnie) arrived at Brackenridge in November 2019 as a 2 year old. Bonnie was initially purchased as a future brood bitch after meeting Ben Harding and his gundogs at training day s with the Working Gundog Association in SA. We were looking to establish relationships with working gundog breeders and trialers exploring our potential future working dog options. Whilst initially bought as a potential brood bitch, Bonnie was quickly employed onto the International COVID Detector Dog project in October 2020 at the height of the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic. She formed part of the initial Australian COVID -19 medical detector dog team working alongside other dogs from Australian Border Force, the University of Adelaide and the South Australian USAR Task Force.
It speaks volumes for the temperament and trainability of a dog that with no prior training background and experience can adapt and become a proficient detector dog alongside dogs that had significantly more prior experience. Bonnie validated as a Medical Detector Dog at the end of 2020 and developed a reputation for being a thorough and reliable remote sampling detector dog and participated as part of the COVID-19 Detector Dog Trials at Adelaide Airport during 2021.
When not training as a Medical Detector Dog, Bonnie was given some basic training in ‘retrieving’ to promote physical and mental fitness. Unlike traditional retrieving Bonnie would be required to search for scented items that were either placed or thrown into the search environment. Bonnie’s work ethic in her retrieving game is described as persistent and courageous. When on search Bonnie is not easily distracted and she does not hesitate to negotiate difficult terrain and taking a straight line.
Her nose work is excellent and her persistence in searching and not giving up were key traits that caught our initial interest in her.
